Education Scholarship
In 2014, Human Development Initiatives (HDI) established the Education Trust Fund (HDI-ETF), a scholarship scheme designed to support orphans, children of widows, and indigent persons living with disabilities in nursery, primary, and secondary schools across Lagos State. This initiative was born out of concern for the alarming number of out-of-school children and adolescents engaged in street hawking and subjected to daily abuse in Nigeria. Addressing their future became a core priority for the organization.
Since its inception, HDI-ETF has provided educational support to over 1,000 children in various nursery, primary, and secondary schools within Lagos State. Beneficiaries receive comprehensive assistance, including essential school materials such as uniforms, sandals, notebooks, textbooks, bags, socks, and writing tools. The fund also covers government-approved fees for terminal examinations like NECO and UTME. To date, more than 400 students have graduated from secondary school under this program.
Tertiary Education Scholarship
In 2017, as part of activities marking HDI’s 20th anniversary and in response to the financial challenges faced by HDI-ETF beneficiaries transitioning to tertiary education, the HDI-Tertiary Education Trust Fund (HDI-TETF) was introduced. Initially supporting just one student, the scheme has since grown significantly, now assisting 111students enrolled in various tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Out of this number, 36 students have successfully graduated.
Through these initiatives, HDI remains committed to reducing educational inequality and empowering vulnerable children and youth with the tools to achieve a brighter future
Legal & Psycho-social Counseling
A centre providing free legal and psychosocial counseling services was inaugurated in 1998 to address diverse forms of challenges widows encounter as a result of the demise of their spouse. These include the procurement of letters of administration where the husband died intestate. i.e., without a will:
- Free legal counseling is given to enlighten various clients; these include couples and widows, informing them of their rights and legal status so as to protect themselves from violation and abuse of their rights.
- Mediation and conflict resolution, as well as partnership with other agencies of government and legal institutions, to ensure the protection of human rights.
Pad Distribution to Children living with Disability
At Human Development Initiatives Foundation (HDI), we believe that every child deserves access to basic hygiene, dignity, and care. Regardless of ability. As part of our commitment to inclusive health and empowerment. This initiative was born out of the recognition that menstrual hygiene is often overlooked in conversations around disability. Many children face not only physical challenges but also social stigma and limited access to essential sanitary products. HDI stepped in to bridge that gap with compassion, respect, and practical support.
